Every fall, Friends of the Yampa has their fundraiser, the Big Snow Bash. For the last two years, they’ve asked artists to paint ammo cans as an auction item. These watertight metal boxes make great places to put personal gear on raft trips. Above is the box I painted this year!
Below is the wave that I painted last year. These were popular auction items last year, and I loved seeing how different artists handled painting them. The Big Snow Bash is still coming up, October 11, 2025. I’m sure there will be more unique designs by different artists this year, and you can bid online.
I have a personal history with painting ammo cans. When my family did our first big multi-day trip on the Green River in 1981, I painted these cans for us. I thought it was pretty funny to be asked to paint again as a grown up artist!
